Preaching the First Principles in a Post-Christian World

This series argues that modern Western culture increasingly resembles the world Paul preached to: spiritually indifferent, suspicious of religion, and filled with alternative “gods” and loyalties. Using Paul’s approach in Athens as the model, it emphasizes starting with what people already believe, finding limited points of contact, then moving patiently toward the Bible’s first principles, especially the one true God and the call to turn from modern idolatry. It also stresses that effective preaching depends on understanding the audience’s worldview, building bridges without compromise, and clearly presenting what people are missing.
Part 1
We live in a similar world to Paul’s, a world full of idolatry, antagonistic to the idea of the one true God of Israel.
Part 2
When preaching to the Gentiles, Paul found people willing to leave their cultic rituals and turn to the one true and living God. We can experience the same thing.
Part 3
We can find common ground with the modern-day Epicureans and Stoics we meet and lead people to the one true God of the Bible.
Part 4
Even though the world around us is in darkness as to the one true God, there is a semblance of understanding.
Part 5
Our task is to help people turn from the idolatry of the world to embrace the one true God.
